Article written by Gordon Hoare 5th Dan

Our founder and the international president of AIWA ( Alliance of International Wado-Ryu), Sensei Gary Swift Kyoshi 7th Dan, started training in martial arts in 1966 and Wado in 1973.  He opened his first club in 1976 at Cranleigh and started the Horsham club in 1995.  He transferred the Horsham club to Sensei Ken Luckhurst 3rd Dan ( now moved to Cornwall) and Sensei Gordon Hoare Tashi 3rd Dan ( awarded 5th Dan in December 2005) assisted by Sensei Derry Jarvis 1st Dan and senior students.  Our founder keeps an active interest in all his clubs and instructors are required to attend his standardisation courses to ensure the style is being taught correctly and consistently.  The club first trained at Horsham Park sports centre, when that venue closed it moved to Millais school and then in 1999 to Chesworth Junior School in Kings Road.

We are a small friendly non-profit making club whose members enjoy learning the art of Wado Karate.  There isn’t a better feeling than knowing that you  are teaching Wado karate down the generations and sharing the experience that I have had with training with some of the best Wado martial artists around. We meet every Wednesday 7.00p.m. (To 8.30 p.m. juniors and 9.00 p.m. seniors) all through the year including school holidays.  Students are required to have an annual licence £25.00 and pay a weekly fee of £3.00 juniors and £4.00 seniors.  These fees are used to cover expenses such as instructors insurance, First Aid training, Equipment, Hall hire etc and no club member is paid a fee.

The club is open to anyone aged 8 or over who is reasonably fit ( if over 40 a medical check is advised), has a desire to learn Wado karate and who will agree to respect all club members, abide by the club rules and follow club etiquette.

‘Syllabus’:- This is a type of schedule or planner.  In this book are all the basic moves of Wado karate that a Sensei/ Instructor and /or Black belt would carry on them at all times for instructing.  These books are available for purchase off of the instructors, this allows the students to brush-up on techniques for Gradings.

‘Gradings’:- These are stages within the art that allow you to advance from red belt to black belt.  The gradings are not just tested on physical techniques but the mental side of the art. These include the rules, techniques and sayings within Wado karate.

Red belt is the first grading you will perform.  All beginners are awarded with a white belt and suit upon membership. The red belt covers the simple basics of karate, such as step forward punch head, chest.  This is the first official technique you will learn on your first lesson.  Due to insurance it is vital that you fill out an insurance form on your first visit.  It is illegal if you train at any club without a licence even for beginners, you are more than welcome to come down to Chesworth school at 7.00 p.m. on Wednesdays to watch the lessons, but unfortunately you cannot train without insurance which you will fill out on your first visit   If you’re thinking of trying out karate, with DKW, you will be warmly invited in to dojo/ training hall.  You will make friends and feel right at home on your first visit.

RedBelt Syllabus:-

For RED Belt syllabus the commands will be given in Japanese then in English.
