Hypnosis and Karate with Qualified Hypnotherapist and psychotherapist Dr Neil Hall.

Sensei Bill Bishop always used to say that, in karate, the most important part of the body is the brain. This might seem a rather strange thing to say. After all, karate is all about kicking, punching and blocking. It isn’t an intellectual pursuit like chess or playing the piano! Surely all you need for karate are strong muscles, fitness and stamina? But to excel in karate a strong, healthy body is not enough. Strength, stamina and suppleness are developed with regular training. But to reach the karate heights something else is needed.
To get as far as Laura, you need something extra – a certain attitude of mind, an ability to focus upon a goal or target and the inner strength to stay the distance and, where necessary, to go the extra mile. Sensei Gary Swift has reached the dizzy heights of 7th Dan – as well as achieving a degree of mastery in a number of other martial arts. That sort of achievement takes more than mere muscle – it requires a certain attitude of mind.
This state of mind has nothing to do with mere willpower or aggression. On the contrary, it is a relaxed state of mind in which one can focus all one’s attention upon the task in hand. If the mind is relaxed then so is the body. And relaxation is of vital importance because, in karate as in other martial arts, tension is an impediment. It impedes the flow of the techniques and makes everything effortful rather than smooth and flowing. Anyone who has spent time in a dojo will know that there are some students who simply try too hard, whose physical and mental tension harms rather than helps their performance in their chosen martial art.
There are some lucky people, such as Laura, Sensei Gary Swift, Sensei Gordon Hoare and the great and much-missed Sensei Bill, who seem to have been born with the relaxed, patient and attentive state of mind. But others can achieve this state of mind, and one way of doing so is by hypnosis. Through hypnosis, anyone can achieve this vital state of mental and physical relaxation. It won’t transform you into a Sensei Gary Swift overnight! But it will provide you with the firm foundation upon which you can build your technique and will greatly assist you progress through the grades.

Hypnotherapy can be used to break bad habits – such as smoking, binge drinking, overeating etc. It can help to develop good habits, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, setting and achievement of targets, and so on. It can be used to treat phobias, such as fear of heights or spiders. It can also treat all sorts of confidence and self-esteem issues.
But you don’t need to have a problem to benefit from hypnotherapy. It can help you to improve in areas in which you may already be doing well – such as martial arts, sport in general or learning and study. While hypnotherapy does have its limitations – it cannot treat clinical depression, chronic alcoholism, drug addiction or psychosis – almost everyone can derive some benefit from this natural and powerful therapy.
